Looking to replace or install the roof system on your commercial building? There are many different types of roofing systems available, and they can vary substantially in cost.

No matter which you choose, the main purpose of any roofing system is to protect buildings from the elements and keep contents secure and undamaged. An established roofing company should be able to advise you on which type of system will work best for your commercial enterprise and location.

Shingle roofing

Asphalt shingles are a time-tested roofing solution for steep sloped commercial buildings. They remain popular because maintenance is minimal, and they come in wide variety of styles and colors. Now gaining in popularity, fiberglass shingles also have a strong fire resistance rating.

Metal roofing

Metals used for this traditional style of roofing include corrugated, galvanized steel, copper, aluminum and treated aggregates. Protective surface layers are generally added to minimize damage from exposure to the elements. Metal roofs also look good, have strong fire resistance ratings, and are more sustainable than many other traditional commercial roofing options.

EPDM

Thermoset roofing systems (or EPDM for "ethylene propylene diene terpolymer") use a synthetic rubber membrane to offer long-lasting durability. They are simple to install, maintain and repair relative to many other commercial roof types. Other benefits include flexibility in colder temperatures, resistance to some acids and solvents, and reflective properties that may help lower cooling costs.

TPO

Thermoplastic Polyolefin or TPO roofing systems are rapidly becoming a best-selling commercial roofing system. They are made of lightweight, durable material with tolerances for low and high temperatures. TPO roofs also feature a high resistance to fire, punctures, chemicals and high winds.

Built up roof systems

Built-up roofing (or BUR) is a variation on the standard tar-and-gravel roof. The number of layers used can be varied to help control costs or meet enhanced durability requirements. It's a low-slope roof system and can include coal tar, asphalt, gravel, and modified bitumen surfaces.
